What is it?

This is a programme to give young people the skills to coach, umpire and manage hockey teams. It involves working with other young people and alongside our existing team of coaches, managers, and umpires.

In September you will start working with one of our age group teams on a Sunday morning either at DSTC or CSGS. As the club is trialling this new programme there will be a max of 8 participants with 2 assigned to following age group, Minis, U8’s, U10’s, U12’s.

Who is it aimed at?

It is aimed at youth players in school years 9 - 12, aged 13 – 17 years.

It will also help to fulfil the service requirement of Duke of Edinburgh programme if taking the volunteering element should you be taking part in it.

When does it take place?

The first module Intro to Leadership will be on Monday 11th September 7pm – 8.30pm at the clubhouse. Further modules will be take place throughout the season. A schedule of classroom dates will be issued. The programme ends in March 2023, when the Young Leader will be presented with their Certificate on Presentation Evening.

A timetable of Sunday attendance will also be issued to each participant once the full calendar of fixtures and training times are known. This may mean occasionally missing your own age group training to fulfil a minimum of 8 coaching sessions over the season.

MORE FAQs

What if I cannot make a session?

Yes. We totally understand how busy it is being a hockey player, attending school and managing your homework time. We ask for a regular commitment to training because teams work well when familiar faces are involved each week. If you cannot make a session, then it is important to clearly communicate with your age group lead coach in advance.

Please contact the Youth Development Officer or your Lead Coach, preferably in advance, giving good notice.

Do I receive a formal qualification?

Everyone who completes the course receives a certificate and the time will count towards Duke of Edinburgh or equivalent qualifications. The learning is an excellent start to a players’ coaching journey and dovetails with England hockey’s formal coach education programme, which is available from age 16 upwards.

Who runs the programme?

The Youth Development Officer will oversee the programme and deliver the classroom and practical sessions, alongside the Head of Coaching, Umpire Development Officer and Lead Coaches.
